Baron BMW can help you learn why your car or truck is shaking when you brake.
As a driver, one of the unnerving feelings is when you feel your vehicle shaking while you’re driving. Is it a flat tire, did that pothole ruin my car suspension, or did I break the driveshaft? There are several components that could be the culprit as to why the car is shuddering, and the potential problems can fluctuate greatly. The most probable cause of the shaking most often happens in the vicinity of your car’s wheels and tires. They connect your car to the road, and if anything is broken, you are going to notice. On a more serious note, it might be a broken transmission mount or a broken control arm. These more serious part failures might leave you stuck on the side of the road.
If you got new tires recently, your vehicle vibrating could be from the wheels and tires that were not balanced correctly. Balancing the tires makes sure the weight of the tires and wheels are evenly distributed for the smoothest drive possible. So, if you feel the tire shaking when you are driving, it might be a tire that is no longer balanced. If you can confirm that the new tires are balanced, but the car is still shaking, make sure the lugnuts are completely tightened, and make sure the tire pressure is correct. If your tires are causing the shake, you should get them looked at immediately.
If the vehicle vibrates when braking, that is a pretty strong signal that you might want to have your brakes looked at. The most obvious reason for your steering wheel shake is worn rotors. When a driver pushes down on the brake pedal, pieces of metal called brake pads compress against the brake rotors to bring your vehicle to a stop. A smooth surface will give you smooth braking. A warped brake rotor surface will cause vibrations when braking, kind of like how a brick road feels bumpier than a highway. Other causes of the shaking include stuck brake calipers or damaged suspension components. If you feel your steering wheel begin to wobble, bring it to us, and we’ll check it out.
If a vehicle is shuddering before you ever start driving, then there’s a good chance that you have some broken parts. The most obvious reasons for your car shaking at idle are:
Worn Driveshaft – If damaged or not perfectly balanced, it might be the source of the shudders
Bad CV joints – Working in conjunction with the driveshaft, cv joints get the power from the engine to the wheels and tires and, if they are failing, can be the cause of the car shaking.
Failing Engine Mounts – As the name implies, these components help affix the engine to the vehicle. If they get broken or damaged, it can let your engine move around.
If you’ve noticed a shudder in your car, then bring it to us for an inspection. Our skilled technicians will find the source of the vibration and provide you with options to get you back on the road quickly.
