Pre-Production BMW X7 Models Are Being Built in South Carolina

January 16th, 2018 by

Last month, BMW Group reported that the initial pre-production models of the new BMW X7 Sports Activity Vehicle had begun being manufactured at the company's facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina. This step kicks off a twelve-month process that will end with the production X7 being introduced at the end of 2018, after the SAV undergoes a variety of tests conducted in all manners of conditions.

To optimize the plant's production, BMW is using the same assembly line for the BMW X7 as is currently used to produce the BMW X5 and BMW X6 production models. However, specialists take over the finishing steps to complete the production and testing process, which includes fitting the pre-production models with a camouflage wrap before they leave the plant. These conspicuous, striped patterns are intended to help obscure the final design of the SAV as much as possible.

In a press release, Knudt Flor, head of the BMW Group Spartanburg plant, commented, "We are proud to produce the BMW X7 here in Spartanburg, the home of our X models. This is a very special vehicle and our employees are looking forward to yet a further member of the X family. Together with the BMW X7, a total of five BMW X models will be exported from Spartanburg to all four corners of the globe."
